Mussio Vineyard – Sherry and Jerry Mussio

Mussio Vineyard has plantings of Ortega, Pinot Gris and Maréchal Foch vines.

Jerry and Sherry Mussio decided to start their vineyard not long after purchasing their Saanichton farm in 1993.  The son of Italian immigrants who viewed wine as an essential part of living, Jerry decided that the new farm, situated on a slope overlooking the San Juan Islands, just had to have a vineyard.

Starting off with Ortega vines provided by the local Agriculture Research Station, Jerry and Sherry started with a small plot of vines, enough to produce about 100 liters of wine.  Their plan was to evaluate the quality of wine and the decide whether or not to expand the vineyard. After two or three years of trials, their wines began to win local wine competitions and they concluded that this varietal was a good match for their vineyard, and with the great Peninsula food products.  The vineyard expanded with plantings of Pinot Gris and Maréchal Foch vines.

As charter members of the Wine Island Growers’ Association, Sherry and Jerry have been active in the identification of grape varieties best suited to our region of Vancouver Island.
